Philodendron

Philodendron is a genus of more than 500 species of flowering plants. In fact, it is the second largest genus in the family Araceae. Anthurium is the largest in the family. Additionally, Pothos and Monstera plants are close cousins of the Philodendron genus.

Many Philodendron varieties are grown as indoor plants. Indeed because they adapt well to low light conditions. In fact, these stout-stemmed climbers are native to tropical rainforests. 

The name Philodendron comes from the Greek word “philo” meaning love or affection and “dendron” meaning tree. Thus, most Philodendron varieties found growing on trees or climbing around them.

The most common philodendron available in cultivation is surely the heart-leaf philodendron or Philodendron hederaceum (variety oxycardium). Known for its bright green heart shaped leaves.

Philodendron Brasil is a stunning plant. Variegated with exotic yellow green and chartreuse leaves. In fact, it gets its name from the similar looking Brazilian flag. It is a low maintenance plant and air purifying.

Leaves of philodendron plants are typically green. However, they may be coppery, red, or purplish. Additionally, parallel leaf veins are usually green or sometimes red or white. 

Furthermore, their size, shape, and leaf texture can vary considerably. Of course this can all depend on the species and age of the plant. Scientists are continually looking at plant relationships and at times reclassify plants. Occasionally, you will see some Philodendron species referred to as Thaumatophyllum.

The Philodendron Golden Goddess is native to Thailand. This Goddess grows best in bright, indirect light. Its bold chartreuse foliage loves to climb. Also known as Malay Gold.

The Philodendron Micans is a rare velvety variety. In fact, leaves are soft to the touch with a light shimmer. New leaves start off pink, maturing into a dark, coppery-green. Also, Micans prefers Medium to bright indirect light.

The Split-leaf philodendron is actually not a philodendron at all. Although, it was formerly classified in that genus. Also known as Swiss Cheese Plant or Windowleaf Plant. However, its scientific name is Monstera deliciosa.
