Succulent Water Propagation is easy & fun!
Succulent Water Propagation is one of my favorite ways to multiply my succulent collection. It is a great way to grow free plants. Beware….succulent water propagation can be VERY addicting! You have been warned.
Here is my Guide on How to Propagate Succulents in Water:
First, find a succulent that needs trimming or one that you would like more of. Use clean sharp scissors or shears and snip a 2-3″ cutting. I especially like to do this with leggy or dying plants. Although, it is best to do with healthy succulents that have recently been watered. Leave about an inch or so of bare stem on the bottom of your cutting.
Allow your succulent cuttings to dry and callus over for 3-5, days depending on your climate.
Next, place your succulent cutting in water. Find a mini vase, jar, bottle, or cup that is the right size for the cuttings and add water. I love these jars for succulent leaves or baby succulent cuttings. Antique milk bottles or other vintage bottles are my favorites to use for succulent water propagation.
Place the cutting so that just the end of the stem or leaf is resting just inside the surface of the water. I like to cover just the tip of the bottom of the succulent.
Allow your succulent cuttings to get indirect sunlight, but not direct sun. Without strong roots the cutting will not survive in full sun and may sunburn. Another option is to add a few pieces of activated charcoal or activated carbon to the bottle. This helps with the algae that may build up on the bottom of your bottle.
Change the water every one to two weeks. Then, wait for roots to develop. Depending on the succulent variety, this may take a few days to a few weeks.
Once the succulent has a decent amount of roots I transfer to a well draining cactus soil and water thoroughly. They will need more water than a typical succulent as there will be some shock to the plant once it is removed from the water and placed into soil.
